Faults Overview

Fleetio integrates with several GPS tracking & telematics providers to import and manage Faults, such as Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) alerts. These can also be reported via API.

Establishing Fault Rules allows you to classify vehicle fault codes so you can analyze the same Faults across multiple vehicles. These workflows handle individual occurrences of the same code across any vehicle.

Faults can be marked as Critical, which will cause them to be treated with extra attention on the account Dashboard and Vehicle profiles, or they can be Ignored. You may also establish a Rule that applies a custom Name and/or Description to a fault code.

TIP: Configure User Notification Settings to trigger an email notification when a Fault is reported on a watched Vehicle, and set User Permissions to control available actions for that reported Fault.

Add Fault Rules

To add new Fault Rules:

  1. Go to your Account Menu and select Settings.

  1. In the Settings sidebar, click Fault Rules in the Issues section.
  2. Click the + Add Fault Rule button in the top right.

  1. Enter the corresponding Code, which will be generated from the GPS tracking device or reported from the API. This is a required field and must be an exact match for it to be recognized.

  1. Add a Name and Description.

NOTE: The text entered here will OVERWRITE the value imported from your telematics provider. This applies to both existing and new Faults.

  1. Designate the Priority Handling for the Code. You may choose "Ignore Code" or "Flag as Critical."
  2. Click Save Fault Rule when complete.

NOTE: "Ignore Code" will ignore any existing OPEN occurrences of this Code; "Flag as Critical" will apply to any existing occurrences of this Code.

Edit or Delete Fault Rules

Once added, Fault Rules will display in the table.

Click the More Actions Button to Edit or Delete a fault code.

View Reported Faults - Dashboard, List, and Vehicle Details Page

Critical Faults that have been communicated via an integrated tracking device or API will appear on the Dashboard as shown here, as long as they are Open or Pending status.

Click the View Faults link to go to to the Faults Index, filtered for Critical handling.

The Faults Index is also accessible by selecting Issues > Faults in the Sidebar Navigation.

Click the More Actions Button and select Manage Fault Rules for a quick link to your Account Settings.

The Vehicle Details Page also lists reported Fault Codes reported for that Vehicle, along with the Count of each by clicking the Faults tab.

Fault Import Frequency

By default, Faults from most third-party providers are automatically imported every night, but this setting may be adjusted for hourly import. Faults can also be manually synced to Refresh the most current data.

To configure your account for hourly import:

  1. Go to your Account Menu and select Integrations.
  2. Click the More Actions Button for the integration in question and select Edit.

  1. Under Settings, check the box to Download Engine Faults Hourly (exact wording may vary by provider):

Refresh Faults

In addition to the automatic nightly or hourly import of Faults/DTC Alerts, you can manually Refresh Faults for the most current data at any time.

  1. Click Issues in the Sidebar Navigation, then select Faults.
  2. Click the More Actions Button and select Refresh Faults.

Fault Count

Some third-party providers support Fault Count tracking. This value is the number of instances the Fault Code has been recorded for the Vehicle and displays the number reported in the last column of the Fault List.

Typically, Fleetio receives the Count value from the GPS provider, but different providers count and report "events" differently; therefore, you may check directly with your provider for questions about count values.

Fault Count can also be received and reported via API.

If Fault Count is NOT supported by the provider, the Count column will display a dash and text explanation:

Fault Status and Actions

Take action against Faults, either individually or in bulk, for individual or multiple Vehicles. Actions are available from the Faults list in Issues > Faults or on the Vehicle Details Page in the Faults tab.

A More Actions Button is available at the end of the row for each Fault Code reported, with options that vary depending on Fault status.

Open Faults are unresolved. Pending Faults have been added as Issues but have not yet been Resolved.

  • Fault status Open
    • Create Issue or Ignore
    • Create a Fault Rule appears if there is no Rule already defined
    • Note: When you create an Issue from an Open Fault, the status automatically updates to Pending
  • Fault status Pending
    • View Issue (or use the quick link in the Status column)
    • Note: Once the Issue is Resolved, the Fault status also updates to Resolved
  • Fault status Ignored
    • Unignore

Bulk Actions are available in the Open and Ignored tabs.

Select the checkboxes (a), then click the Actions Drop-down Menu to select available actions (b).

Set User Permissions for Faults

You may control a User's ability to View Faults, Export Data, and/or Ignore Codes.

If you wish to control a User's ability to Create Issues from Faults, you will find this permission under the Issues heading.

Fault Notifications

Email and/or push fault notifications are managed in your User Notification Settings. You'll also receive fault notifications in your notifications center.

NOTE: Email notifications are not sent for Ignored Faults.

Export a List of Faults

To export a list of faults, click Issues > Faults in the Sidebar Navigation. Then, click the More Actions Button to export a list of faults to a CSV.
